Repairing your internet connection with Diagnose and Repair
An Internet connection going down can be one of the most frustrating things that happen to you while you’re on the computer. I know a couple of people with unsolvable router problems or problems with their Internet connection where they get disconnected more than once per week. Even if it is just occurs once in a while, I find that many users resort to the long way to solving this problem such as:
- Restarting the computer
- Unplugging the router
- Unplugging the modem
The easiest way to repair a network connection, would only involve a few simple mouse movements and clicks.
Most problems involving problems with your Internet connection can easily be solved with the Diagnose and Repair feature.
There are a few ways to do this. If you have the network icon in your system tray, all you have to do is right click and click on Diagnose and Repair.

If you can’t find the Networking icon, the other way to get to this feature would be to open up the Start Menu, and click on Network. Then click on Network and Sharing Center in your breadcrumb (the blue menu bar.)

Finally, just click on Diagnose and Repair on the sidebar.

I really hate the way they messed up with Vista from an IT support standpoint. Don’t they know the rightclick on the network icon in the notification area and then pressing R was faster then the stupid convoluted way they are doing it now with Vista? Also rightclicking on an empty desktop and pressing R would bring you to the desktop properties? Oh man!! I can tell you one thing for sure. I will NOT be deploying Vista on any of the systems I support. All new computers purchased by my IT dept will be reloaded with XP Pro

Please excuse the newby…I’ve done this and it seems that our pc drops the internet at least 3 to 4 times a day. Brand new Dell with Vista Home Premium…

I have tried prior to your post every thing mentioned. None of it worked correctly.
My solution, I added a on/off switch to the power supply for my Router. I loose connection 2 to 3 times a day.
when I see internet fail , i reach over turn off the router power, wait 3 secs, turn on and it restarts and usually I have internet back in - total time less than 1 min.
This same many mouse clickes, faster and easier (IMHO).

have you checked the usual stuff like proximity to the router, signal strength, etc.
also 2.4 ghz phones interfere with wireless sometimes make sure that you dont have one right next to ur router/computer.
lastly if all else fails, call dell, those bastards get paid for a reason. And don’t take no for an answer from them cuz they try to brush u off a lot

Vista seems to be a pretty good program until you start having to make changes to the networking side of it. I prefer the XP version for networking but I guess thats because i haven’t yet found out how to properly intergrate XP and Vista Together. Having Multiple Computer really makes things more difficult on the Network Side of things I really just want to keep all of my Music Files off my Laptop and be able to use my Laptop anywhere in the House and play those files. Vista is makeing this really difficult.
In setting up a Network it ended up dropping my Old Network Key, This forced me to connect to one of the neighbors to fine internet help. Which… by the way still haven’t found.

I’ve experienced a weird one. My network connection shows that internet connection has been established and I can ping yahoo.com. When I try to browse the internet, “page cannot be displayed.” I tried all different troubleshooting techniques.
Finally got lucky and uninstalled all of the MS updates. One of the fricken updates cause this crazy problem. I Turn my auto update off; suggest to try one update at a time.

Just purchased a Toshiba Satellite A215-S4747 and it drops the internet every single day. Driving me crazy. Installed an updated driver, and it still drops. The “diagnose connection problems” thingy says I’m still connected to the internet and then I have to reboot. Anyone else having the same problem? Once I reboot, the internet displays fine, but if we walk away or close the lid, we have to reboot.

No me permite navegar por internet y se que no es un problema de conexión por que puedo utilizar mi messenger

I too am having the same problem as Audashs. I have to reboot to get connection again. “Diagnose connection problems” sometime show up with “installed Layered Service Provide (LSP) is malfunctioning. So far only suggestion found on the internet is to turn off Internet Connection Sharing… I’ll give it a try and report back if it helps.

Windows Vista? Did Microsoft even try this out before they sold it to the public? It seems retro. Like using Windows 3.1 all over again. I guess it’s safe to say XP was the zenith of Microsoft’s history. Someday, I may even be able to print from Internet Explorer 7, or stay connected on-line. Maybe if I think real hard it will happen. Just like when Microsoft thought real hard and marketed this piece of trash called Vista. These are the dark ages.

I’m in exactly the same boat as Audashs: I bought the exact same laptop on 10/03 and I lose my internet connection at least 3-5 times daily. I’ve tried every fix i’ve found online but no fix works - I just keep rebooting. I’m seriously considering installing XP on this laptop.

Hi All,
I have the same problem… Fckng piece of trash Vista keeps disconnecting and there’s nothing I can do to stop it. I have my old Win XP laptop also connected to the wi fi network and it holds the connection all day, while the newer, faster OS cannot keep a Wi Fi connection up… Indeed these are the dark ages, as Bytes said.
Anyway, if someone knows of any fix (one of those “magic ms kb updates” maybe) please say something here, or leave a comment in my blog.
Thanks,
Diego

i used to get the same problem but i got a solution to it. i have a lan connection, i connects through an external usb cable modem. Below mentioned steps to avoid this problem from happening.
Turn your cable modem and laptop off.
plug the ethernet/usb cable into your laptop, first turn on the modem, then turn on the laptop.
This way you`ll not get the modem diagnose/repair problem.

Hi guys! It’s funny, but I have the same problem with wifi connection and this is gonna kill me someday. I loose connection lots of times a day. The most surprising thing is that I have the same model of Toshiba. I don’t know what to do. Should I install XP on my laptop or leave Vista, like it is? What did you do? Please, give me advice.

Is it just your toshiba laptop or all wireless internet computers in your house? It can be the interference of other wireless devices such as your wireless phone. Try changing the channel on one of the devices.

i don’t know what’s the matter… I’ve asked my neighbours about their connection, but they told me that it works quite good. Then I asked about the os. No one of them had Vista. Now I guess that it’s because of os

Once you connect to the network, try to save it onto your list of saved network connections.
If the problem persists, you can contact me via the contact form above.

Keith: You have to harass them lol. Threaten to switch to a new company. Sometimes it could be something with your router.
February 9th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Audashs: Changing the channel on your wireless router might help. What solved my problem on a Toshiba A205-S7464 was an update to the Intel wireless driver. The change was pushed Windows Update, but didn’t run automatically, so I tried a manual install. No more Internet drops over the last 3 weeks.
If you find another update for your trackpad, don’t install it if you also use a mouse. That new driver wouldn’t allow my mouse to work at all. Un-installing the trackpad driver fixed the problem.

A warning to everyone; “diagnose and repair” on Vista made my connection problems worse!
I was trying to connect to another computer on my home network, Vista informed me there was a problem and suggested I “diagnose and repair” (little did I know the target computer was off at the time, doh!). I foolishly allowed Vista to do it’s thing but obviously this didn’t fix the problem; going downstairs and finding the computer was off made me feel like an idiot.
I later discovered that Firefox could no longer connect to the Internet (although IE could), Messenger wouldn’t work, my antivirus couldn’t update, there were all sorts of problems that only a system restore eventually fixed.
Just be wary of letting Vista try and fix anything for you!

I don’t think you should have used Diagnose and Repair for that purpose.

i have the same problem as many of you, this is the case. sometimes i load a website and next thing you know, when i try to load a second web page the same minute i get the “page cannot be displayed” message.but some how im still connected to my messenger and talking to people on the internet because i was on it before the internet stopped working.Or im playing an online game i close it and then i cant access either IE or Mozzila firefox and the diagnose and repair function does nothing for me.Only way i am able to get back on the internet is to reboot my vista laptop and then sometimes minutes later or later that day it stops working again.i bought a new router thinking it was the problem since it was like 4yrs old but nope the new router did the same thing the next day, any permanent solutions to this?its really starting to irritate me to always have to reboot day after day.
